Falcon Zero F170 – Our Review
The Falcon Zero F170 dash cam, after its release in early 2015, soon became one of the hottest sellingcar DVRs on Amazon. Not only this, the F170 also received some really amazing ratings from the people who bought and used it.
The F170 is a medium sized cam measuring at 102mm x 57mm x 13mm which means that it’s quite discreet. However, the silver ring around the lens and silver branding at the front seems to reduce the stealth somewhat; as a workaround, you can cover them with a black adhesive tape.
Talking about the technical side of Falcon Zero F170, it’s a single channel dashboard camera and records @ 1080 p (Full HD) videos. While the video quality is very good during the day time, the cam seems to perform good at night. (See sample videos)
F170 sports all standard features that you can expect in a mid-price range car DVR. It’s got loop recording, auto on/off, G-Sensor, time and date stamp on video etc.
Falcon Zero F170 even supports GPS and you can very easily overlay its GPS data over Google maps via the software provided (which you can download below – for Mac & Windows).
Another good feature of Falcon F170 is the WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) which helps in better night time videos. The WDR feature needs to be enabled manually using F170’s menu.
Falcon F170’s user menu is what we think can bettered. It’s not that user friendly but not terribly bad either. Here’s a Falcon Zero F170 menu walkthrough video.
The 2.7” display screen works really well and you can easily play/view all the recorded videos.
Falcon Zero F170 has a very wide viewing angle of 170°; this is one of the largest viewing angle that’s available in the dashboard camera market right now. Surprisingly, even after such a wide angle of view there’s negligible fish eye effect (some really interesting electronics in there).
A feature that we liked in F170 is the un-buffered parking mode. With the un-buffered parking mode, you can set it to wake up and start recording as soon as it detects any movement (either via G-Sensor or visually). Once the F170 wakes up, it records for the next 10 seconds and goes back to sleep mode.
One area where Falcon F170 seems to lack is the memory card support; while there’re cameras in the market that supports up to 256 GB, the F170 supports up to 64GB memory card.
All in all, the Falcon Zero F170 is a good dashboard camera and should be a buyer’s consideration.
Do have a look at day and night time video samples that we’ve included below.
